Fans of Robert Zemeckis's brilliant special effects, and of Jim Carrey's transformative acting abilities, will be swept away by their collaboration in the stunning A Christmas Carol. Perhaps more surprising is that Charles Dickens purists will also be impressed and captivated by this version of the oft-told tale--which is dark, complex, and in its way, uncompromising. Which is all to say that this Christmas Carol is an instant holiday classic, easily taking its place alongside the Alistair Sim version, the Patrick Stewart version, and even the Mr. Magoo version of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his ultimate holiday redemption. Carrey is dazzling as not only Scrooge, the most miserable, and miserly, man in 19th-century England, but as the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. As with The Polar Express, Zemeckis animates the film over the actors' physical performances onscreen, but here, the emotion is intact--even heightened by the spiffy effects. Joining Carrey in the cast are terrific players, including Gary Oldman (Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the ghost of Marley), Cary Elwes, Bob Hoskins, and Robin Wright Penn. But the heart of the film is Carrey, whose dramatic acting has shone in films like The Truman Show and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The emotional connection Carrey makes with his characters is what brings Dickens's classic alive--and what connects the viewer with the true spirit of the holidays. "God bless us, every one." --A.T. Hurley

1 out of 5 stars More PC nonsense courtesy of Charles "Marx" Dickens   August 18, 2010

Sweet lord, here we go again! Let's take one successful businessman who believes you should work for a living. And it's not like he lacks compassion. He gives his shiftless employee off for Christmas, even though that's 24 hours that could have been spent making money ... OK, whatever... I guess THAT'S not important! Anyway, he's visited by the ghosts of Lenin, Stalin, and Roosevelt, who make him feel like some kind of fool for being a successful businessman and by the end, that successful businessman turns into a Communist, giving away his fortune to a bunch of people who deserved whatever misery they brought on themselves because they're a bunch of shiftless, lazy good-for-nothings leeching off the state. C'mon, read your Bible! The Lord helps those that help themselves. I know, I know. You ask, "What about little Tiny Tim?" Well, what about him? Maybe that Bob Cratchit shouldn't have dropped all that acid back in the day ... Don't be mistaken. Do you think it's any coincidence that the star, Jim Carrey, originally came from Canada, the home of Socialized medicine? And that this film is being released during the big health care debate going on right now in Congress? Don't let Jim's new American citizenry fool you. Behind that American flag t-shirt beats a heart that looks like a maple leaf. You've been warned.

5 out of 5 stars Great Animated Adaptation   August 16, 2010

I really love this story and am especially a fan of Robert Zemeckis and his work. I find it hard to believe that some people were turned off by A Christmas Carol, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I found there to be equal amounts of adults and children in the theater when I went to see this film. Couples ranging from late teens to middle age were there and laughing along with the kids. It was a lot of fun and I plan to purchase the Blu Ray when it's available. I was a fan of The Polar Express and I'm a sucker for motion capture animation. I'll rank this movie along with the Polar Express as one of my top classic Christmas movies. The Polar Express (Widescreen Edition)

2 out of 5 stars Zemeckis Makes Another One.   July 28, 2010

Motion Capture gets slightly better with every film that Zemeckis makes, but why in California's holy name does he keep making them? With Polar Express and this one, they are both stories which strain under his efforts to make them feature length through pointless lengthy action, overdramatic pauses, and obvious hamming on the CG process.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then observe as you and your friends look at each other saying, "why doesn't he just get on with it?", and sigh loudly as moments are stretched intolerably. There's a "roller-coaster" sequence near the end that made me almost walk out on it. On the upside, the performance capture of Scrooge is pretty good, and each frame looks like a painting. So: hats off, Modelers, Lighting Directors, and Rigging Directors! Get out and support those guys, and look for the amazing, magical Geordie Martinez in the rigging and aniamtion credits, and shout "HUZZAH!"

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in no BluRay 3D   July 26, 2010

I always buy, what I think are special movies, in BluRay. I would like it in 3D but this is only offered in 2D. You have to buy the other set with theater type 3D plus new equipment to see it in 3D. I think that is a rip. Companies are always pushing new technology onto the public before their current technology is worn out. In this economy who has 3 to 4 thousand dollars to upgrade their equipment when they already have BluRay and HD hardware. Rich people I suppose. With a large chunk of the country out of work who do they think can buy the new hardware. The price of the BluRay sets aren't that much different but is the cost of the hardware for the BluRay 3D set that makes it impossible. I don't know who to fault for this, Disney, or the companies making the special 3D hardware. I don't think this is going to be a profit maker for anyone. They should transition by offering a regular 3D in the set too for those of us that can't afford new and expensive 3D equipment. I would rate the movie itself 5 stars but I rated the BluRays low becuae they don't consider the common consumer with limited funds.

1 out of 5 stars Highway Robbery offering only theater version 3D   July 25, 2010

I think it is a crime to offer this BluRay disk only in the Theater version 3D. I realize the regular BluRay 3D like that used in Polar Express is kind of crummy, at least we are able to watch it in 3D. To watch "A Christmas Carol" in 3D you have to buy a new 3D BluRay machine plus a new screen. That is unbelievable in these hard economic times to expect people to go out and buy new expensive hardware for the few movies that will be available in the theater version 3D. Then I don't like the fact the shuttered 3D glasses have to be hooked up by wires to the 3D player. If the also offered a regular 3D version in the set then I would go a head and buy it hoping that in the future I might come into some money to watch the theater version 3D. However, that will never happen. I am stuck with my current equipment until they die or I die which ever comes first. I am very upset with the producers of this set!
